absorption line: A dark line in a
continuous spectrum corresponding
to absorption of photons by atoms or
molecules. The wavelength, width,
and other features of an absorption
line are characteristic of a particular
atom or molecule under particular
physical conditions. Thus
astronomers can study the physical
conditions on distant celestial objects.
